Cohorts that match how people use apps

· Minseo Park

Signup-week cohorts answer “are newer users sticking?” They do not explain why. Behavior cohorts—users who completed onboarding, invited a teammate, or connected an integration—tie retention to product moments.

Define the activation event carefully. If activation is too easy, every cohort looks healthy. If it is too rare, you measure power users and miss the middle.

For application analytics in B2B products, role-based cohorts often matter more than acquisition source. An admin and an end user share a login but not a job-to-be-done.

Publish cohort definitions next to the chart. Without shared definitions, meetings dissolve into arguing about the numbers instead of deciding what to ship.
